Who Are You?

Pete Townshend (AP)Well, all I can say is, it’s a good thing the light show was so good.  Though I give Pete and Roger credit for trying to show the world that they’re not too old to rock-n-roll… clearly they are.

The Who – one of my favorite bands of all time – need to retire already.  Makes me wonder if maybe this is the last time we will ever see Pete and Roger together on stage.  It’s a shame The Who had to cram their mediocre medley into a halftime show segment that, to my dissapointment was shorter than I would have liked.  And if this was an attempt at renewing record sales for The Who, I don’t think it’s going to do much good.  I would much rather have seen the boys play “Baba O’Riley”, or “Won’t Get Fooled Again” in its entirety.  Instead, the shortened intros and incomplete verses left me feeling like I was just watching a cheap, Las Vegas finale.

I think probably what bothers me most, is the fact that seeing those guys close-up reminded me of how old I am.  I wonder if Pete Townshend feels like I do; that My Generation is gone… for good.  The generation of 60’s and 70’s rebels and hooligans that simply wished to buck the system and be punks and/or hippies is gone.  Sure there are young punks and hippies around today, but it’s all about the fashion – period.  Being a geniune punk rocker is something for younger men.  When old guys try to do it, it just looks and feels silly.  Did they embarrass themselves?  Well, maybe just a little.  I think Pete should just play his guitar and stay away from the microphone from now on.

But as much as I’m being critical, it was obvious to me that Pete was having a lot of fun.  And for as much incredible music that has come from his creative youth, I suppose he deserves to have some fun.  And just because I’m feeling sorry for myself at  being reminded of how old I am, it doesn’t mean that The Who has to drift quietly into obscurity.

But I think their legend would have lived better in my memory, had I not watched that halftime show.
